The process of identifying a suitable college or university for my daughter to attend has been agonizing and time consuming. There are numerous forms to fill out i.e., school applications, scholarship applications, student essays, FASFA and financial applications. Attending college fairs and school tours is another facet of searching for the right fit. It has been a roller coaster ride and even if a scholarship is proposed, you have to read the fine print because a school might offer a full scholarship that only covers full tuition or that doesn’t cover out of state fees which can be exorbitant.
Recently, I discovered one aspect of the search that was not only worthwhile but it was refreshing. The Infinite Scholars Fair was held several weeks ago in St. Louis and I must admit I was apprehensive after attending so many of these types of events that offered little more than general information. I was pleasantly surprised when my daughter was offered over 6 scholarships on the spot that not only included full tuition, dormitory cost and books but in some instances a monthly stipend was provided to be used for her expenses. While we had been slowly negotiating back and forth with other schools, we walked out of the Infinite Scholars Fair with numerous letters of acceptance, bona fide scholarships that amounted to over $350,000 in payments over the course of 4 years, ‘A FULL RIDE’!!
It was so impressive to see Alabama A&M come in with a full staff, dressed in their burgundy jackets and to watch them work like a well oiled machine. There designated area included laptops, printers, network all established to enable the student to submit their resume, transcript, ACT scores along with their essay and be processed right on the spot. It has taken me longer to get groceries than it did for my daughter’s information to be processed and instantaneously we were receiving a handshake and her acceptance letter along with a scholarship. Schools like Purdue, U. Of Miami in Ohio, Claftin, St. Louis U. and Hampton U. were some of the other major schools represented.
I am very grateful to Mr. T. Ousley because it is evident that he has put forth a great deal of hard work to insure that our children here in St. Louis who have worked hard academically, have an opportunity to continue there education at a four year college or university regardless of their families financial status. My daughter is now sorting through several legitimate scholarship offers as opposed to wondering if I will have to go into debt in order to finance her continued education. I would encourage parents with high school students Juniors or Seniors to note the Infinite Scholars College Fair on your calendar, you will not be disappointed!
Sincerely,
Alexis Glenn
